EADA Charts & National Ranking Events
EADA uses a system of 'Charts' to monitor the ranking of competitive couples. Certain events known as National Ranking Events (NREs) - also known as National Selection Competitions or Chart Rated Events - are held around the country throughout the year and are used for the compilation of EADA charts. Points are awarded to couples according to their final position in the selected events in which they have danced. The charts are then used by the Council to select couples to represent England in IDSF World & European Championships in each of the various age groups and also to select those couples who will be invited to elite squad training each year. To be selected to represent England and to attend elite squad training at least one member of the couple must hold a current, valid British passport. For information about the selection of couples click here.
The calendar for NREs is decided by the chart committee. For a guide to how the calendar is decided click here. The events themselves are hosted by promoters and must comply with EADA chart rules. NREs often require entry in advance – please contact the promoter and don’t forget to take your EADA card to the event (you must be a member of EADA to compete in an NRE).
It is not necessary for a couple to participate in every NRE for their particular category or style in order to be ranked, although a minimum number of events is specified for each chart before a couple can have a ranking. The best results for any given couple are tabulated to determine their chart position, and the number of such results required varies according to style and category. A couple may elect to participate in more than the minimum number of NREs in an effort to improve their overall ranking.
| Number of events per year | The number of “best” results counted | The number of results required for a ranking | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Juvenile | 7 | 4 | 3 |
| Junior Ballroom & Latin | 9 | 5 | 4 |
| Junior 10 Dance | 5 | 3 | 2 |
| Youth Ballroom & Latin | 9 | 5 | 4 |
| Youth 10 Dance | 5 | 3 | 2 |
| Amateur Ballroom & Latin | 9 | 5 | 4 |
| Amateur 10 Dance | 5 | 3 | 2 |
| Senior I Ballroom & Latin | 9 | 5 | 4 |
| Senior I 10 Dance | 5* | 3* | 2 |
| Senior II Ballroom | 9 | 5 | 4 |
| Senior II Latin | 9 | 5 | 4 |
| Senior III Ballroom | 9 | 5 | 4 |
* For 2010 we have 7 Senior I 10-dance events on offer and are trialling the best 4 results out of 7.
Points are awarded for placings in an NRE as follows:
- 1st place: 12 points
- 2nd place: 11 points
- 3rd place: 10 points
- 4th place: 9 points
- 5th place: 8 points
- 6th place: 7 points
- Below 6th but making the final: 6 points
- Semi Finalists 5 points
- Quarter Finalist 4 points
- The round before quarter finalist 3 points
- The round before this: 2 points
If a couple is representing England on the day of a chart event, they receive points for that event which are equal to their average score.

If you have any questions about the compilation of charts representing England and replies to invitations, please contact the charts coordinator, Mike Fortin on charts [at] eada [dot] org [dot] uk.
For couples not representing England:
It will be possible for members of the Welsh or Scottish Amateur Dancesport Associations to compete in EADA NREs from June 2009. To do so please contact the Membership Secretary for your Amateur organisation who will liaise with EADA. A fee of £10 per person per year is charged for a permit to compete in the Ranking events. You must hold a registration for your national association before applying for a permit. Those who apply will receive a card with a unique EADA number; this card must be shown at chart rated competitions.
Foreign nationals who have been resident in the UK for a period of five years continuously are now able to compete in EADA NRES. Further details on the legislation which came into force in January 2009 are available here. Contact the membership [at] eada [dot] org [dot] uk (Membership Secretary) for more information.
Selection of couples to represent England:
Selection of couples to represent England in World, European or International events is normally based on the couple's chart position at the time the invitation for the event is received by EADA from the member body of the IDSF organising the Championship. The two top couples in the chart are invited for Ballroom and Latin, the top one couple for ten dance championships. However on the rare occasion that the invitation is received 6 months prior to the date of Championship it may be more appropriate to wait before selecting the couples. If the top couples in the chart decline then the invitation is passed to the next couple in the chart and so on down the rankings.
The EADA Secretary writes to the couples who have been selected to represent England. To represent England at least half the couple must have a valid British passport. Couples to whom the Invitation is sent are asked to notify the Secretary immediately if they are unable to accept the Invitation and write an official Letter of Acceptance within seven days. Couples aged 17 and under are required to have a parent sign a consent form agreeing for them to be selected. If, after “accepting” the Invitation a couple decide not to attend they will be subject to Disciplinary Action. If their excuse is accident or injury, they must produce a doctor’s certificate to confirm this.
The first time that a couple represents England abroad they are sent an English Team badge and offered an EADA Jacket with their name and “England” printed on the back. Contact merchandise [at] eada [dot] org [dot] uk to order tracksuit tops. Within the invitation couples are also asked to contact Colin Hanson-New on travel [at] eada [dot] org [dot] uk to sort out their travel arrangements. EADA refund the cost of travel expenses for couples selected to represent England in World and European Championships, along with one chaperone per couples if the couples are under 18. We will shortly be developing a set of guidelines for chaperones. Sometimes the couples’ coach or a parent who is a Professional offers to attend as a “team captain” and EADA are very grateful to the many Professionals who are willing to go (at their own expense) to help inexperienced couples.
The Organiser of the World or European Championship usually meets the cost of the hotel rooms. Further information about travel for overseas couples can be found in the useful information section.
When the Secretary receives the Letters of Acceptance from the top two (or one) couple/s, she then writes to the third/second couple on the Chart inviting them to be “First Reserve” and then, having received their acceptance, replies to the Organizer’s Invitation, nominating these couples on behalf of EADA.
If an event is subsequently postponed, the selection will be considered null and void and, when the invitation is received for the revised date, a fresh selection will be made based on the current rankings.
EADA ask that all those who represent England in European and World Championships sends a short report with photos if possible to Rachelle on publicity [at] eada [dot] org [dot] uk
Please note that the selection of Adult Formation Teams to represent England at the World & European championships will be based on the relative performances of the eligible teams at the British Open Championships and the British National Championships respectively.

EADA also receives many Invitations from abroad asking us to send “Our Best Ten Dance/Standard/Latin couple”. Some of them actually name the couple they wish to invite and these are obviously passed immediately to the couple concerned. Sometimes the Organiser pays for travel expenses and offers free accommodation and meals; sometimes they offer prize money to everyone making the last 24 (for instance). EADA also receives many Invitations for Adjudicators which are passed on immediately if they are named.

How the chart calendar is decided:
Every April the EADA Secretary send out chart forms to all promoters who hosted NREs in the previous year. Promoters are asked to return the forms to the EADA Office fully completed by 30th June and the EADA Office compiles a spreadsheet of all the requests. A meeting of the EADA chart committee is called in July each year in order to decide the calendar for the following year.
In an effort to spread the NREs evenly, the Chart Committee divides England roughly into three; drawing an imaginary line above the M4 leaving Watford, reading and Bristol in the South; another line above Birmingham and calling this are the Midlands and then everything above it the North. The chart committee tries to place three events in each of these areas for each age group & discipline. Hopefully this means not all members have long distances to travel for every NRE. We also try and spread events in the same category throughout the year. However we have to ensure that different events which might attract the same people (such as Amateur and Youth Ballroom) are not on the same date and that the venues for the NREs we are allocating to the promoters are suitable for that age group and discipline. We also have to take into account any feedback sent in writing to the EADA Office prior to the meeting and also the results of our online competition feedback survey. As a general rule 3 NREs (one from each chart) for one promoter at one event is the maximum they are allocated due to time constraints.
Once provisional dates have been decided (and the committee have had time to go away and check that the calendar works) promoters are sent a letter with details of the NREs which they have been granted. They are also sent a copy of the guidelines for hosting EADA NREs. The most important of these is that they must check EADA membership cards, that they have 7 adjudicators, (all of whom must have a BDC licence); they must start the NRE within 45minutes of the time advertised and allow between 20 and 40 minutes inbetween rounds. Because many of our members have to travel we feel it is important that Juniors finish by 4pm and Youth couples by 6pm.
If the promoters are happy they contact the EADA Office and send in payment for their events. Once we have received payment from the promoters we are able to publish the calendar on the website.
