The International Grand Ball, San Francisco

The International Grand Ball 2009 - San Francisco
by Katherine Giannini
We were slightly nervous about flying to San Francisco because it was such a long way from home. However, the journey went really well and we were greeted by Tom, Amy, Joe and Sasha immediately at the airport and we later met up with Richard and Morgan too, making a total of four couples in our little English team. Inside the hotel we were looked after perfectly, and as the competition was held in a ballroom downstairs, things were even better! The competitions were in the late afternoon and evening, so luckily we were able to go into the city and have a look around all the amazing sights and tourist attractions. It was nice to go out with everyone, without being in a dancing environment - enemies on the floor, friends off the floor! However, then it was time to do some hard work. The first night was the Amateur Latin, and the atmosphere in the hall was absolutely fantastic - every seat was packed with excited spectators eager to watch us dance, which really spurred all couples on to perform the best we possibly could. Things didn't change for the next few nights either! The ballroom was filled with cheers that made the dancing so enjoyable. I'm sure everyone enjoyed the experience, both in the competition and out. Unfortunately it was all over too soon and before we knew it, we were saying good bye to one another, ready to leave and go back to England.
We had a fantastic time and would love to do it again. Thank you to the organisers for looking after us so well and thank you to the other English couples for making the experience one to remember!
