GADA Report June 2009
The latest news from Guernsey Amateur Dancers
June 2009, by Lesley Le Tissier
The last three months have been busy for GADA. The A.G.M. and the Martel Maides Dancefloor Challenge took place in April. James Taplin, Andrew Cuerden, Hanna Haarala and Gary Foster have all been over at various times to teach and we have also had a course in Argentine Tango.
The A.G.M. was held on 19th April. Greg Clinton-Tarsted replaced Natasha Axworthy as treasurer and Amanda Poole and Stina Hall joined the General committee. Jonathan Garrit and Michelle Zugg both stepped down...
GADA’s forth Dancefloor Challenge was held on 25th April. Martel Maides sponsored us for the third time and chose the charity Wigwam to receive half the proceeds of the evening. Wigwam supports families with special needs children. Tickets sold out within seven minutes of going on sale! This year eleven couples took to the floor. The challenge was won by a GBG magazine director, Chris Markham with GADA partner Kelly Baudains dancing a Paso Doble and a waltz. They achieved maximum points for both dances.
The proceeds of two raffles and an auction for a Nebuchadnezzar (equivalent of 26 bottles) of champagne, some Stanley Gibbons prints and some of the dancers’ dresses helped raise the total proceeds of the evening to about £10,000. Half of which will go to Wigwam.
We have three major events coming up in the next few months and would welcome any raffle prizes anyone should wish to donate.
The Marlborough Trust’s Summer Gala Dinner Dance is on 27h June at Beau Sejour. Brian Fortuna and Kristina Rinanoff, of “Strictly” fame will be giving a demonstration. They will also be doing workshops on Saturday afternoon from 3pm. A few spaces are still available for beginners and novice at £15 a workshop. Numbers are limited. Marlborough Trust has donated two holidays for the major raffle plus several other fantastic prizes.
The second Children’s Dance Competition will be held on Sunday 5th July at the Grammar School. Andrew Cuerden and Hanna Haarala have very kindly agreed to judge and give a demonstration. Entry tickets will be £4.00 for adults and £2.50 for children. Last year’s event was really worth watching so please give your support to our future champions.
On 18th July is our Salsa & Latin Ball at Hugo Restaurant. Tickets £45 including shows by professional dancers and 3 course buffet. From 7pm. Wear red in aid of Guernsey Cardiac Association.
